September

As summer bids farewell and temperatures settle around a comfy 75°F (24°C), September beckons adventure seekers to uncover Japan’s stunning terrain with a dash of hiking, biking, and kayaking.

The delightful climate and reduced crowds make it the ultimate time to embark on a physical and cultural escapade.

Whether you’re meandering through Tokyo’s lively streets, pedaling along the renowned Shimanami Kaido route, or savoring a heart-warming bowl of ramen in Onomichi, this month promises an unforgettable experience.

October

October rolls around in Japan, signaling the start of the harvest season. It’s the ideal time to go on a food tour and treat yourself to the delicious seasonal delights the country has to offer. You can also visit farms and enjoy the experience of picking your own produce.

One of the must-do activities is to attend the Takayama Autumn Festival, which is one of the 3 largest festivals in Japan, and takes place on October 9th and 10th every year.

Make sure to try out some amazing regional delicacies at the festival street food stalls, and indulge in mouthwatering dishes made with fresh ingredients like rice, persimmons, chestnuts, and Japanese pears.

Nature lovers and photography enthusiasts rejoice! If you’re planning a trip to Japan, November should definitely be on your radar.

This is the perfect time to witness the jaw-dropping beauty of fall foliage, known as koyo, that sets the stage for some incredible photo ops.

From the iconic Osaka Castle to the enchanting Bishamon-do Temple in Kyoto and the picturesque Momijidani Garden in Wakayama, there’s no shortage of breathtaking landmarks to capture. Happy shooting!

Why Visit Japan in the Fall Season

As someone who has visited Japan in various seasons of the year, I can confidently say that fall is one of the best times to experience this beautiful country. Here are why :

Fall Foliage

Japan is famous for its cherry blossoms in the spring, but the autumn leaves can be just as stunning. From late October to early December, the trees turn vivid hues of red, orange, and yellow, creating a breathtaking landscape.

There are many places to go leaf-peeping during the fall season, such as Kyoto, Nikko, and Hokkaido, where the autumn foliage color is spectacular this time of year.

Some of the best spots to see the fall foliage include Kyoto’s Tofukuji Temple, Tokyo’s Rikugien Garden, and Nikko’s Toshogu Shrine.

Comfortable Weather

Fall in Japan offers temperate weather that’s perfect for outdoor walks. As summer transitions to autumn, Japan begins to cool down, making it an ideal time to explore the country’s natural beauty.

The humidity drops, and the temperatures are mild, making it easy to enjoy outdoor activities without feeling too hot or too cold.

Festivals and Events

Japan is famous for its festivals, and fall is no exception.

One of the most popular events is the Jidai Matsuri (“Festival of the Ages”) in Kyoto, which takes place on October 22nd every year. This festival celebrates Kyoto’s history and culture, with a 5-hour parade featuring over 2,000 performers dressed in elaborate traditional costumes.

Another is the Kishiwada Danjiri Festival in Osaka, which takes place from September 16th and 17th every year. There, you will see giant danjiri floats weighing up to a whopping 4 tons, all decked out with carvings, paper lanterns, and banners. And the best part – the danjiri floats are enthusiastically and vigorously pushed, pulled, and hauled through the streets by many Japanese locals wearing traditional costumes. It’s quite a sight to behold!

Other popular fall events include the Tokyo International Film Festival (towards the end of October), and the Sapporo Autumn Fest in Odori Park (September).

Delicious Food

Japan is famous for its delicious food, and autumn is the ideal time to savor the flavors of the season. You definitely don’t want to miss out on trying chestnuts, sweet potatoes, and mushrooms, which are absolute must-haves.

Moreover, autumn is also the season for sake enthusiasts, as many breweries organize exclusive tastings and events during this period.

Reduced Crowds

Fall season is the perfect time to enjoy a less hectic atmosphere. With fewer tourists around, you can freely wander the streets and find plenty of space to stretch out.

Plus, you won’t have to deal with long lines at restaurants and attractions. It’s a win-win situation!
